Anil Cherian is a medical graduate from the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India (graduated in 1989). He qualified as a Pediatrician from the same college and worked till 1997 in various rural hospitals in India. In 1998 he completed a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines in Manila (UPM) majoring in Epidemiology ( magna-cum-laude). Equipped with an MPH he worked as the Project Director for a Reproductive and Child Health Project in Balrampur District of the State of Uttar Pradesh in India between 1998-2003, partnering with AUSAID, UNICEF and the Government ofUttar Pradesh. He piloted the first Hearth Nutrition Project in India. Anil started an Action Research Cell (ARC) for the Emmanuel Hospital Association in 1999. Their study on the Incidence of Neural Tube Defects in Rural India was published in Lancet in 2005 (Lancet 2005:366; 930-31). The ARC partnered with Dr. David Morley, Institute of Child Health, London on growth monitoring, Dr. David Lewis, University College, London on Encephalitis in Eastern UP.
In 2006 he went on to do a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Economics from the University of York (by distance) and became interested in Health Systems Research. In 2008 he began work on a research project on “Revitalization of Health for All” which was supported by the Teasdale Corti Research grant for Comprehensives Primary Health Care. He is the Vice-president of the National Partnership for TB Care and Control in India which is a civil society partnership. He was involved in the Strategic planning for the National TB Programme 2012-17. He has worked with UNDP and the Ministry of Labour & Employment on strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (RSBY) in India
Anil currently works as the Director for Community Health & Development of the Emmanuel Hospital Association. He the founding member secretary of the Christian Coalition for Health in India.
