I love Jesus! My wife Mandy is a photographer/graphic designer and a nurse (BSN), and I'm an MD in my 2nd year of family practice residency. We have a 2 year old son, Judah, and a 8 month old daughter, Sarala. We have been praying for years for direction about where to go to do long-term missions, and it seems that God is leading us toward Nepal.
I went to medical school planning on being a missionary when done with training. I want to help people however I can, both with their physical needs and their spiritual needs. I've always wanted to go somewhere where neither of these needs are being met.
We are excited, and we have some experience, but there are still a lot of questions. My wife Mandy grew up on the mission field in Indonesia. My parents were missionaries in Hawaii and then Mexico. We've both done many short term trips overseas as adults. But neither of us has been to Nepal; and in a lot of ways not only do I think we not know all the answers, but we also don't even know what questions to ask. We just came back from the Louisville GMHC, and we are really excited and we are wide open for God to use us where ever he wants to.
Some of the questions we haven't gotten answered yet are: what organization to go with (though we are actively looking into organizations); paying off the student loans (though we've talked to Project Med Send and they may take us on); questions about how to go about getting there and starting things: how does one end up with a team? What kind of team members would we want to have? What are the specific needs in Nepal? (We're actively looking into this too as much as can be done with the internet and books.) What will our ministry look like and how do we figure this out (I'd love to be spending equal time doing evangelism/discipleship and medicine, or somehow doing them together). What does it take to start a rural clinic in a developing country? What further training might we need? What questions should we be asking?
