Joanna Gaines, PhD, MPH is a behavioral epidemiologist with the Travelers’ Health Branch, Division of Global Migration and Quarantine, National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, CDC. She is also commissioned as a Lieutenant Commander with the US Public Health Service. She received an AB in Anthropology from Princeton University and her PhD in Developmental Psychology and MPH in Health Behaviors from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. LCDR Gaines has been involved in multiple disease outbreak investigations, including disease outbreaks among missionaries and travelers, and international health response activities, including the Haiti cholera outbreak that began in 2010 and the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Her interests include infectious disease, epidemiology, and health behaviors.
