Meredith Hawkins

Meredith A. Hawkins, MD is Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Founder and Director of Einstein’s Global Diabetes Initiative. Her current research interests include the effects of nutrient excess on insulin resistance, nutritional regulation of adipose tissue macrophages, and the regulation of hepatic glucose production by hyperglycemia per se in diabetes mellitus. Dr. Hawkins’ international programs include a partnership with Makerere University medical school in Kampala, Uganda to develop formal medical education program on diabetes studies, and a parternship with Christian Medical College in Vellore, India to investigate the pathogenesis of the poorly understood condition called “malnutrition diabetes.” Dr. Hawkins’ work has received many honors and awards, including the Novartis Young Investigator in Diabetes Award, the Outstanding Investigator Award of the American Federation of Medical Research, and election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
