I was very quickly drawn to this trip as I read the 'urgent needs' email that came across my phone one night - there were no dentists on the team yet. I was about to graduate from dental school and I was ready to serve at a moment’s notice – the only kicker was that, unlike the handful of trips I had been on in the past, the spontaneity didn’t allow me to budget for this trip. However, that didn’t stop me as I knew God would provide as he always does. In fact, He provided fruitfully through the Naomi Kim Scholarship and various dentists I have come to know and for that I am humbled and grateful.
Going into this trip I treated it like any other, but coming out of this trip it was unlike any other. I had been to Peru with GHO in the past and had a great time so I expected the same this time around, but from the very start I could feel this trip was going to be different. The environment that was created through GHO and Dr. Dynes, our team leader, allowed the Spirit to work freely. There was a common bond among us, most of who signed up last minute to fill the need. We were all there to serve the Lord and the story behind everyone’s attendance was unique.
Having the opportunity to see the beautiful people and back country of Honduras and explore even further by volunteering to travel to a remote village and treat those in need was outstanding. Although we felt overrun at times in the dental clinic, the support team and the dental providers never missed a beat. Everyone was always ready to help each other out in any way even through ten hour days. I learned from one of the dentists on the team the powerful effect of helping someone no matter what you’re doing. It is something I will take with me and utilize in my life.
The work of the Spirit throughout the week was profound. I learned from some big time Christian’s how to communicate the gospel, get over my fear of discussing my faith in casual conversation and step up as a Christian man. This trip did actually change my life for the better and I am ultimately closer to Christ because of it.
