"Motherhood is a deep and rich gift. However, there are many physical, emotional and spiritual obstacles through the journey and it will undoubtedly require much strength and sacrifice. We want young women to know that God has made them to meet this challenge and when embraced the reward will be greater than they can ever imagine. Though our cultures and customs may vary, it is our belief that some basic human longings unite us all. We long for hope. For encouragement. For rest. For freedom. For fulfillment. And these are just a few of them. In our deepest places, we share so much. We hope that through this program you will experience a glimpse of God’s goodness – a moment of hope. We want to place before you, and before those whom you serve, an opportunity to reach for Him - as He reaches out for you."
excerpt from Breath of Life
The first night of the GMHC in 2010 Erika and I found ourselves alone in the sanctuary before the keynote speaker. We had both found the conference online and decided to attend by ourselves. Erika traveled from CO and I came from neighboring Lexington.
By no accident God brought us together in Louisville, KY with a heart for Christ and a desire to help those in need. The following summer we traveled to Southern India for 3 months to partner with local Community Health Workers concerned with the health of mothers and infants in their villages.
Half a billion children live in India, making it home to the largest population of children in the world. For every 1,000 children born in India, 69 never reach their 5th birthday. Half of these deaths are due to preventable disease caused by inadequate sanitation, unsafe water and poor hygiene.
We hoped to alleviate some of the burden by restoring the Breath of Life through our workbook that focuses on fertility, breastfeeding, bonding, hygiene, home health and solar water purification. Many of the activities were borrowed from The Hesperian Foundation, such as the Tippy Tap, ORT Recipes and Natural Refrigerator, and supplemented with verses that explained God's plan for everyone to live a healthy physical and spiritual life.
By the end of the summer we worked with 150 CHWs in 5 different village clusters with the potential to reach thousands. Proof that "The one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."
Please join us in praying for the women and children of rural India. And those who have dedicated their lives to serving them. Pray that God would reveal himself to those who haven't heard and infect their lives with grace and joy. Pray that He would also hold those working tirelessly, keep them safe, protect them from illness and restores their energy.
