From a young age, Joseph Harvey has followed God’s call to be a medical missionary to the Republic of Congo. After finding the special woman who would share this call at Houghton College, Joseph completed the combined MD/MPH&TM program at Tulane, while Rebecca earned her RN at LSU. Six months after completing Family Practice Residency in Erie, PA, the young family moved to Brazzaville, Congo. They completed their language training, but plans were suddenly shaped by the outbreak of civil war. An evacuation led them to serve at two other mission hospitals (Vanga, DRC and Bongolo, Gabon) before arriving at their destination of Impfondo where Elikia Health Center was founded in 2000. Congo’s Pioneer Christian Hospital officially opened its doors in January 2006. A former communist youth camp has been transformed into a center of health and hope for the people of several nations, providing outpatient and inpatient medicine, pediatrics, surgery, maternity, laboratory, imagery, and pharmacy services with a vibrant chaplaincy program, Christian community health radio station, nurses’ training school, HIV/AIDS & TB treatment and prevention programs, and much more. Joseph and Rebecca have four children, Olivia, Claire, Isabelle and Noah.
