After 10 years in private OB/GYN practice (MD from Medical College of WIS, Residency in Baltimore, MD) I followed a calling to serve in Guatemala full time. During this time I was exposed to the short term medical missions phenomenon and participated in several of these adventures during my first 3 years there. I then attended a workshop in Bristol, TN put on at King College by Dr Dan Fountain. The title of the workshop then was "Building a Healthcare System." It completely changed my thinking and understanding of how westerners can be most useful in the context of global health missions. Dr Fountain became a long time mentor to me (as he was to many others) and helped further develop my thinking and strategies for serving the Church most effectively in ministries of health, healing and wholeness.
Also while in Guatemala I became acquainted with the work of Dr Rufi Macagba in the area of hospital management. He also became a mentor to me and was the stimulus for my pursuit of an MBA in International Development. I now teach a class (Health in Development) at the university (Hope International U) where I earned my MBA.
I was a founding member of what is now the Center for Health in Mission and serve as the Director. We seek to Create spaces for missions innovators to Collaborate in order to Catalyze kingdom transformation among the nations. With a particular focus on strategizing innovations in the use of Christian healthcare services for reaching Unreached people groups.
We are also involved in catalyzing continued conversation regarding Best Practices in Global Health Missions and oversee the management of the Christian Journal for Global Health. We are also working on developing the "Fountain School for Community and Global Health.
We are located on the campus of the US Center for World Mission and William Carey Int U in Pasadena, CA
