PIH was founded in 2004 by SIM missionary, Dr. Perry Jansen and a group of committed Malawian health professionals. The PIH Medical Center opened in 2005 and has become a center of excellence for HIV/AIDS care as well as general medical services. It is gradually growing from a large outpatient facility with a focus on HIV/AIDS to a general hospital. In addition to the Medical Center, PIH also operates a large training program funded by the US government (USAID). The EQUIP project has worked in over 130 hospitals and healthcare facilities to improve the quality and scope of HIV and Tb care. It is one of three major "treatment partners" for USAID and the Malawi Ministry of Health.
