It is hard to imagine that in a country of 180 million that there were no services available to Nigerian's who suffered from heart failure that required open-heart surgery. The open-heart program at UNTH was abandoned in 2003 due to multiple factors, which forced those who could afford the cost of travel, to seek services outside the country and those who could not afford to travel, a death sentence. Through a study conducted in 2004 by VOOM Foundation, our organization recognized the need and took action. In 2013, VOOM Foundation formulated a partnership with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital to restart the only open-heart program at the time. Through generous donations from generous donors and healthcare organizations VOOM Foundation was able to install two operating rooms and four ICU beds to support open-heart procedures and have completed 10 medical missions and performed 130 open-heart cases to date.
