My colleague Brian and I drove 100 yards of a dirt road to Ufuk’s shanty, a rural island in the middle of modern apartment buildings. I was curious how Ufuk would receive us. Ufuk has alternated between periods of passionate study of the Bible for four-to-six hours a week with Brian and periods of not returning Brian’s phone calls for months.
A village-dressed woman greeted Brian warmly and called for Ufuk. When Ufuk arrived Brian said, “We’re taking you somewhere, you’ve got 10 minutes to get ready.” Without blinking an eye, Ufuk complied and ten minutes later, we were on the road.
Ufuk shared the story of his journey to faith in Christ with me. Two points stood out . At one point in his journey, he “started feeling the Holy Book” while reading the Scriptures with Brian. Later, after Brian had challenged him to pray aloud and he heard words streaming beautifully from his lips, he felt he had become“became a full believer.” I liked the unique way he expressed what God had done in his life.
