Spencer developed a passion for medical missions in high school, participating in several missions with his church in Georgia. While at the University of Georgia for undergrad, Spencer honed in on pursuing opportunities in medical missions, studying biology, Spanish, and public health. Spencer interned with a medical mission NGO in Matagalpa, Nicaragua during the summers of 2009 and 2010. There he developed an interest in community health and development especially after seeing the impact that public health can have on individuals and communities. After completing his bachelors degree at the University of Georgia in 2012, Spencer moved to Chapel Hill, NC to attend graduate school at the UNC Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. Spencer studied health policy and management, specifically expanding his technical skills in healthcare finance. In May 2014, Spencer received a masters degree in healthcare administration. During graduate school, he worked at the NC Office of Rural Health and Community Care serving as the project coordinator of the Appalachian Care Medical Mission. This role combined Spencer's interest of international medical missions with a domestic focus, as over 10,000 individuals in western NC received access to health care in June 2014. Since July 2014, Spencer has worked at UNC Children's Hospital as a division administrator in the Department of Pediatrics. He oversees the physician groups for the pediatric intensive care unit and the pediatric emergency department. Spencer is excited about expanding his health care administration skills in this role, while volunteering with a local free clinic, and becoming involved in his church.
